When does CU Tango Club meet and who is allowed to come?

Every Friday night at 7:00 in the basement of the Carlson Gym. While most of our members are CU grads and undergrads, we also welcome members of the Colorado dance community, high school students, young professionals, and anyone else who wants to tango. Come join us!

What kind of tango do you learn at Tango Club?

CU Tango Club is a club for Argentine Tango (as opposed to Ballroom, etc.). Argentine Tango can be danced open or closed, to traditional or modern music. It is a social dance (as opposed to competition or performance-orientated) and it is completely improvised. There are many different styles and philosophies of Argentine Tango, and we try to expose you to a variety of these approaches throughout the semester.

How much does the practice cost? What if I'm broke?

For the month of September, 2010, Club Tango is FREE! However, we still need to pay our teachers and rent for the room. How exactly does this work? Your generous tips, of course. Starting in October, pay what you can from week to week. Why do we do this? Because we dearly love our amazing teachers who continually give their time to CU tango for a somewhat smaller payment then normal. We also have to rent out the room weekly from the university so we have a place to dance.

What should I wear to practice?

Deodorant! Also, wear smooth-soled shoes (ladies: ballet flats, dance shoes, or high heels that strap on securely work great, but don't wear flip-flops. If you don't have shoes, socks work fine). Casual clothing is suggested. Guys usually wear pants instead of shorts.

Do I need a partner?

Nope. There is usually a good gender balance. You will probably end up practicing with a dozen different people over about an hour and a half. However, if you bring a date, you don't have to rotate if you don't want to.

How long is the lesson?

The lesson is an hour long. We try to embrace the spontaneity and flexibility of Argentine culture, so our schedule will fluctuate depending on the energy in the room. After the lessons at 8:00 PM there is an awesome dance called a practica where people can dance or practice what they learned that runs until about 10:00.

Who teaches the lessons?

We bring in different teachers each month from the Denver/Boulder area to teach the classes. They are all professional instructors chosen for their unique approach and passion for tango.

I've danced tango before. Will the lesson be boring?

No! Whether it's your first day or your third year of tango, our classes are entertaining and contain a wealth of material for all levels to deepen their understanding of the dance.

What if I missed the 1st/2nd/3rd/etc week?

Come at 7 PM and take our class! We have brand new beginners every week, so jump on in and the experienced dancers will help you out!

When does Tango Club start up again?

Our first class of the year starts September 3, 2010!

What is the schedule for CU Tango Club for the 2009-2010 school year?

Classes happen every Friday in the Fall starting Sept. 3, except for Nov. 28 (the Friday of Thanksgiving). Our last class of the semester will be December 24. Then, after Winter Break, our first class will be January 15. We have classes every Friday during the Spring semester except for March 26 (the Friday of Spring Break). Our last meeting of the year will be April 30.
